Final Story: A reflection

I have been fond of Chopin’s Nocturne lately, particularly the Op 9 No 2. As I was listening to it the other day, I realised that Op 9 No 2 was a suitable background music to read Josephine Hymes’ “Seasons of Daffodils”. Thus I re-read it again… and it reignited my love to Candy and Terry. It then of course gave way to me thinking the famous Anohito identity, and how it has split the Candyland in two. This is my reflection of those issues, more than 1.5 years after my last post.

Since my last post, I have improved my Japanese quite a bit. I still struggle with Kanji, but I am more fluent with hiragana and katakana. I am more adept as well in understanding nuances in Japanese language; a very very nuanced language I should say. With these new understandings, I can see CCFS in a new light. Paired with my old analyses about Anohito, to keep it short, I can safely say that I still believe Terry to be Anohito.

I have detailed my reasons in this blog, thus I need not repeat them. However, several things popped out every now and then, e.g. the use of 微笑 (bishō) and 微笑み (or at times written as ほほえみ hohoemi) that most often described Terry’s smiles in CCFS. Bishō (and the Kanji part of hohoemi) is composed of two Kanjis: 微 and 笑. The last one 笑 is for “smile”. Yet the first one is for (can be read as “bi” in on-yomi or kasuka in kun-yomi), which denotes minuteness or subtlety. Thus, 微笑, as often the case with Anohito and also Terry, is a subtle smile. It’s Terry’s smile, not Albert’s smile (Albert's smile would be more of 笑顔 egao, which is literally "a smiling face", which fits his sunny disposition).

The second thing that came to mind is Avon River, of course. I understand that my extensive review of The Great Depression might have been too far-fetched; Nagita sensei might actually not have designed it that far. However, I just couldn’t see how Albert would bring Candy to live in a place by an Avon River. The Calumet River might be a more appropriate river (there is no Avon River in the USA). Thus from that account, it is still very plausible for me that Terry is Anohito.

The third thing that I keep thinking back is the series of old Shakespeare books in Candy’s library. The description was very much like Terry’s Shakespeare collection, that I just couldn’t see Candy buying another set of Shakespeare books and display them in her library if she was Albert’s wife. That doesn’t fit her loyal character. Unless Candy has an innate interest in Shakespeare, that is, independent of her past with Terry. Or, that Albert has an interest in Shakespeare, but there's no evidence of such an interest from his side to have a complete collection of Shakespeare books.

The fourth thing that I now remember is how Candy (at her present time in her living room by the Avon River) felt how the heat of Terry’s chest when he held her during their New York breakup was still pulsing within her heart. She would not have married Albert had she still been thinking of Terry like that. Plus, in the same post above, Candy also said this about Terry's voice: "Watashi no daisukina fukami no aru Terry no koe", "Terry's deep voice that I love the most". I have added a footnote in this post how that sentence about Terry's deep voice is uttered in present tense, hence it should apply to Terry being Candy's current significant other.

The last thing I want to replay here is the fact that Nagita re-visited her opus novel. Rewriting a big work is very tiring, thus I think it makes more sense if she wanted to infuse another message there, instead of just repeating something. That message to me is still: Terry is Candy’s husband.

Nevertheless, understanding that Nagita Keiko has revealed that Candy’s and Albert’s relationship was not platonic, I understand that it emboldened the arguments that Albert is Anohito. I think what I take from it is that Albert has grown attached to Candy as a man to a woman, but not vice versa. Some passages in CCFS showed that Albert did indeed show more hints towards that prospect (particularly when seen from Japanese lenses). Chief amongst them would be Albert commenting how Candy had grown into a woman (I forgot which page or volume) and that Albert wanted Candy to stand next to him for a photo but she rejected it. I see those as Albert’s growing attachment to Candy as a man to a woman, but again not vice versa. Candy still loved Albert, and yes, I accept that there is an invisible tie between them, but her love for him is not the same with his changing feeling towards her.

I also need to say that some respected fans would find mistakes in Terry’s characters (chief among them is him slapping Candy) so that Albert is Anohito or finding mistakes in Albert (chief among them is the prospect of a man marrying his adopted daughter) so that Terry is Anohito. I understand where they’re coming from. Nonetheless, I do not use such arguments. Both men are beautiful men (in terms of spirit and also forms) in their own rights. Had Candy ended up with Albert, I’d accept that for her happiness. But Terry being Anohito, hence Candy’s husband, elates my heart, truly.

Thus, if any of dear readers are going to drop comments disputing my arguments, it is within your freedom of speech. However, I kindly ask you to be civil in your exercise, for I have done so to you as well.

As for me, as I understand Japanese language better, I understand why some fans think that Albert is Anohito. I actually now agree that Albert had started to harbour a non-platonic love to Candy (despite him being her adopted father), and based on Japanese culture, this is okay. I have come to accept that possibility too. However,  based on the scenes of Candy’s “present” home and her “present” emotions (“present” being the present moment she was inside her living room/library by the Avon River as she remembered her past), I still think Terry is Anohito. To think that both characters that I love, Candy and Terry, who both have suffered so much in life, are now happy together in that world of mine, I am truly happy for them…

Last but not least: We are still in a pandemic. The largest one the world has ever experienced after the Spanish Flu. Thus, let’s keep it in perspective. Whether Candy’s husband is Albert or Terry, it is your choice. I think Nagita sensei deliberately dropped those breadcrumbs so that Albert and Terry fans can have their own ways. However, life is much more than about who Anohito is. Family and friends matters. Our health matters. Life matters.

Thus, whoever you are, whether you're in Terry's camp or Albert's camp, please take care, and stay healthy. Live life to the fullest.

Post Script:

If you want to see an anime character with a close resemblance to Terry (but with a definite happy ending), watch Howl's Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki). Howl Jenkins Pendragon resembles Terry Grandchester so much physically (they even have similar hairstyles), and both young men like to pull pranks as well (particularly the novel version of Howl, smartly written by Diana Wynne Jones). Plus, Howl in the novel version actually hailed from Wales, hence quite close to Terry's British heritage. I often imagine that Terry without his dark past would be more like Howl.

Howl Jenkins Pendragon & Sophie Hatter (Howl's Moving Castle)

As for the leading lady, Sophie Hatter resembles Candy in her sparks and joie de vivre, despite being turned into an old woman by the Witch of the Waste. Sophie's constant bickering with Howl in the novel version reminds me of Candy-Terry's bickering in the early part of their relationship in St Paul's. However, Sophie's and Howl's love also resembles Candy-Terry's very apparent love from the onset of their relationship.

AND, Howl and Sophie ended up together in both the novel and the anime, so, happy ending y'all!

Hi Unknown,

Candy is a fictional character, but I'm sure we have many strong girls like that around the world.

As for who Candy stays with at the end, I believe that the person is Terry (and I've extensively explained my reasons in this blog, paying attention to grammars etc). But I understand that other people have different interpretations, and I'm not bothered with that...

Hello.

Today I was talking to a friend that is also a Candy fan, I was telling her that once I read about an older version in where Candy doesn't meet Albert when she was a little girl, but she meets Anthony's mother, Rosemary. Now I cannot find anything related to this and I don't know if I am remembering wrong.

Does anyone here has heard of it?

Hello! I’m glad to read you again. I think Terry is Ano hito too. However, you said something that caught my attention, I would like to know how you understood that Albert is falling in love with Candy? Thank you

Dear Freckledtarzan
It's good to see you again! ^^
I share your opinion on the possibility that Albert has feelings for Candy. He knew her as a child and finds her as a woman when he has lost his memory. She takes care of him and this situation can create romantic feelings in him because he has no memory of her before. But, unfortunately for him, these feelings are clearly not shared. Candy sees him as a brother, that's what she tells him in the manga after looking everywhere for him when he had disappeared. But if we do not take the manga into account, we can see that the love she has for Terry is intense throughout the book, that every time she brings it up her heart races, her breathing accelerates, that she is really upset. In the past as in the present. All her present environment reminds of Terry and not Albert, who moreover represents only a few pages in the book compared to those devoted to Terry. We never see a romantic relationship being created between them, or even the birth of one. Candy always behaves with him like a teasing little sister. Her behavior is totally different with Terry. So I can imagine that Albert has feelings for Candy, but the latter quickly understood that they will never be reciprocal, especially with the death of Suzanna which frees Terry and his letter to Candy which rekindles their feelings. This is why he continues to travel and to be absent, even for Candy's birthday. In addition, Nagita reminds several times in CCFS that Albert is Candy's adoptive father. She makes him say it, which, even if it doesn't bother some, makes such a union impossible. This adoption was not mentioned so emphatically in previous novels. This, on Nagita's part, makes sense.
In summary, it is clear that Candy's choice was never Albert and that choice is Terry. Everything leads to him in the nuances as in the evidence. Candy lives with the man she has always loved and enjoys the protection of a big hearted brother who had promised to help her find her happiness .... Besides, FreckledTarzan, do you think that Albert could have helped Candy and Terry reunite?

Referring to Moving castle, I thought the same when I watched it. Howl and Sophie are so similar in many aspects to Terry and Candy! It is my favourite Miyazaki's anime!

Hi Magda,

"how you understood that Albert is falling in love with Candy?" -- several things that I noticed, but one of them is when he said Candy was now a grown-up woman (forgot the exact words). It's here and there and my memory is fuzzy now... but I did have the impression that Albert started to love Candy, but Candy still sees him as her family (instead of a man to love).

thanks for your question,
Icha

Hi Sophie...

Is your name a screen name taken from Howl and Sophie? I love those two lovebirds...

Thanks a lot for your thoughts, I agree with you.

"do you think that Albert could have helped Candy and Terry reunite?" -- I didn't get that impression, but I haven't read the novel in its entirety. I'm in another 'space' now, but I think, I think it would be just Candy replying back to Terry's letter, and all follows from there...

Irene, sorry I don't know the answer to your question.

stay healthy and safe, Sophie and Magda and Irene.

Dear Freckled Tarzan,

What a happy surprise this was, to stumble on your blog and find out that you had written a new post after your long absence! And that you are well and doing fine, considering the times we go through for the past year and a half.

You don't know me, but your translations and your posts were "gold" in the Candy Terry forum. For that, I thank you. And I thank you for this amazing blog!

I never questioned who was the person who shares his life with Candy...

But reading in depth over the years about Candy's creation, Nagita's relationship with Igarashi, their creative differences over the manga, my own dabbling into writing, fan blogs from Japan, and of course, illuminated voices like yours among others, helped me to crystallise who already was in my heart as Candy's enduring love in her life.

Terry <3

Thank you my dear Freckled Tarzan! A big hug from me!
Eleanna

PS. I need to rewatch Howl's moving castle!

Hi my dear Freckled Tarzan it is a pleasure to read you as always!! and I am so glad to know you are fine after this Covid Pandemia! you do what I do when feel nostalgic with CC, and that is to read Season of Daffodils of our amazing Josephyne, but always i think in the melody that fic started: Rhapsody in Blue, by Gershwin that i love so much and is so Terry alike!!!. I am so glad you continue improving your Japanese and more than that you still believe ano hito is Terry. I must tell you that 2020 was sad for covid but also a good year for CCFS because we got the official translation to Spanish of CCFS, published by Arechi Manga, and after having read the French and Italian official translations there is no doubt Terry is ano hito, so many clues!!! so many changes Nagita did if we compare it with the manga and old novels!!! I love so much what you tell us about Terry and Albert´s smiles written in Kanji, and the differences Nagita made!! I love that information!!! I agree totally in what you say about Avon river (only the Stratford one coudl be) and Shakespeare books (only Terry´s could be at Candy´s home in Avon). I love what you said about Albert maybe having romantic feelings for Candy but she didn´t!! yes, i believe that too!! and more when he returned her the diary but never looked at her when talked! Howl´s moving castle is an AMAZING story!! i love it too!!! I want to tell you also that we have the privilege to have two more stories ofically translated to Spanish written by Nagita, by Arechi Magna, and a complete analysis of Nagita´s autobiography published in 2001 and anayslied by some latina fans, so now we can understand better Nagita´s mind and feelings (hard separations, so much pain, but at the end love wins, and reunions occur!!), and also there is an amazing page with a lot of translations from Japanese to English of CCFS, Nagita´s interviews and blogs and also Igarashi´s, made by a Japanese Professional Translatorn paid by Terry´s Angels (tthe Japanese translator doesn´t know CC story, so it is a neutral translation), YOU ARE SO WELCOME TO THAT PAGE IF YOU WANT TO READ AND COMMMENT DEAR FRIEND!!! This is the link: https://candycandyfinalstory.com/. THOUSAND HUGS MY DEAR FRIEND

This is an answer for Irene´s question: No, Candy never met Rosemary (Anthony´s mother in CCFS). Rosemary died when Anthony was a little kid, and Anthony is two years older than Candy. Candy knew about Rosemary when Anthony told her story in front of the garden rose of Lakewood. So maybe that what you read was a fic Irene

Anneth White said...

Evidences for Albert maybe being in love of candy? i have this two moments:
- Albert saying he prefers people consider her being older than his little sister (when they were living at magnolia´s)

- Albert returning the diary at Lakewood telling Candy it is so important for her, but never looked at her while said that (i think he was in love but knew he can´t have her heart because it belongs to Terry, his friend too!!.

And what Freckled Tarzan said is so true!! To have Candy by Albert´s side in the Hotel´s picture can imply so many things, she being his adoptive daughter and she being his fiancée both things at the same time... Candy refused that, she is his adoptive daughter but she prefered to be with her friends, the servants. It is so funny like all the alfans said Candy and Albert were secret lovers in those times... not knowing Candy and Albert are so religious and won´t occult their romance it there was one...

And this is also my opinion about Candy and Terry reunion: when Albert returned the diary to Candy was more or less in 1919 (after WWI ended) and Terry was startting to play Hamlet, so Candy also received Eleanor´s invitation to see the play. I believe Albert and Eleanor helped with that reunion, in a separated way!!

Hugs!!!

Hello Eleanna and Anneth,

Thank you very much for your comments, apologies for the late reply (I don't regularly watch over this blog these days, but I do thank you for your presence).

Anneth, I'm not sure about Albert returning the diary to Candy as his evidence of love, but it might be because I never read the whole novel in English. I need to check the Japanese version to understand its meanings, and at times, I would lose other nuances in that process. But I take your input on that and it's very likely that it might be an evidence of Albert's non-platonic love to Candy...

Hi dear Icha, it is a pleasure tu read you answer and your blog, as always!!!.

Terry´s angels are paying a proffesional Japanese Translator to have the English translation, so you can read what has been translated until now: all Candy´s retrospections, almost all Terry´s part, a big part of the first volume, and all Albert´s letters. And it will continue!!! So you can compare that translation with yours any time you have. The translator does not know CC story so she is very objective with his proffesional work.
This is the link if you want to check it: https://candycandyfinalstory.com/english-excerpts/

When Albert returned the diary to Candy is in one of the last letters from Candy to him, when she talks about their visit to Lakewood to remember Anthony and Rosemary. That is a very emotive letter. For me is the way to ask forgiveness for Anthony´s death and preparing the momento for the arriving of Terry´s news about Hamlet more or less in 1919.

Take care so much dear friend!!!

Anneth White said...

Dear Icha, as i told you in the last answer Terry´s angels are paying a Professional Japanese Translator to translate CCFS to English, but also some interesting material, like Igarashi or Nagita´s interviews in magazines that Lady Gato has with her!!

And look!! finally we have the correct translation of the interview Nagita made in the 80s talking about the three Candy´s Loves!!! Alfans always said Nagita mentioned Candy´s love for Albert like the predestinated one... but this is the correct translation:

- The first love with Anthony, the intense love with Terry, the amicable and gentle love towards Mr. Albert.

Just what we always have believed, and what CCFS told us!! the romantic feeligns are for Anthony and Terry, the filial love is for her dear friend-adoptive father-old brother Albert.

You can see the original magazine that Lady Gato owns, and the translation from Japanese to English, made by the proffessional Japanese translator in this link:

https://candycandyfinalstory.com/myths-debunked/candy3loves/

There are a lot of interesting material in that page!!! all from the origina source that allow us to understand better Nagita´s interests, hobbies, and what does CCFS means for her!!

Hugs dear friend!!!

Hey, so happy to read your newest post in this blog.
And so so happy that you are healthy, so true, this pandemic really shifts our point of views. Health, family, friends, love is what truly matters.

Anyway, I suddenly had the urge to visit CC-Terry and your blog again after I watched SATC re-run. Carrie Bradshaw with her curly blonde hair, funny happy gal, kinda pictured CC spirit for me 😅. And as Terry, its Harry Styles in his OneD days, long haired, handsome mysterious smirk. Hes Terry for me, haha..

Anyways, stay healthy everyone
